Letrozole (Femara)

An aromatase inhibitor increasingly used as first-line ovulation induction, particularly effective for women with PCOS.

Overview

Letrozole, originally developed as a breast cancer medication, has become a preferred first-line treatment for ovulation induction, especially in women with PCOS. By temporarily lowering estrogen production, it stimulates the pituitary to increase FSH, promoting follicle development with a lower risk of multiple pregnancies compared to clomiphene.

How It Works

Letrozole inhibits the aromatase enzyme, temporarily reducing estrogen production. The hypothalamus detects low estrogen and increases GnRH release, which stimulates FSH secretion from the pituitary. The resulting FSH surge promotes ovarian follicle development and ovulation.
